Honeywell (HON) says it is on track to remove all remaining stranded costs by end-2026, adding that it is positioning itself for continued fixed cost productivity in 2027.

What it means

Stranded cost language is the standard residue of large conglomerate separations: when a group splits into multiple listed entities, corporate overhead that no longer attaches to any operating business has to be either reallocated or eliminated, and managements typically put a dated target on it. Honeywell's breakup into separate aerospace, automation and advanced materials companies has been the defining corporate story for the name, and commitments of this kind are the follow-through phase rather than new information. In comparable separations, the market has tended to give little credit for the pledge itself and instead to track execution quarter by quarter, with the stranded cost line and the standalone cost bases of the successor entities being the numbers that determine whether the sum-of-the-parts thesis closes. The relevant distinction is between genuine cost removal and cost that reappears as dis-synergies or one-off separation charges elsewhere in the accounts. Worth watching are segment disclosures from the separated entities, any revision to the end-date, and how management frames 2027 productivity against the new, smaller corporate perimeter.
