Context
Hungarian core readings carry more weight with the central bank than the headline print, which in this market has been distorted repeatedly by regulated energy prices, administered price caps, and forint swings. A marginal downtick in core of this size fits the pattern of gradual disinflation the bank has historically required before continuing easing; the NBH has in past cycles cut from restrictive levels in measured steps, pausing whenever currency weakness threatened to re-import inflation, which makes the forint the real policy constraint rather than any single domestic print. The distinction worth drawing is between core drift driven by soft domestic demand and core drift driven by one-off administered or FX effects, since the former supports further cuts and the latter does not. The usual sequence after prints of this kind is muted knee-jerk pricing in the belly of the HUF curve, with the durable move coming only when the rate-setting council signals whether the data clears the bar for the next step. Follow-ons are the council's statement language on the exchange rate and any revision to the bank's own inflation path, which in small open central European economies has tended to matter more than the print itself.
