Indian Deposit Growth (Jul/24 YY) 15.4% (Prev. 12.7%)
A sharp pickup in deposit growth of this size changes the liquidity picture for the Indian banking system more than it changes the rate outlook directly. The deposit side of the balance sheet has been the persistent constraint in this cycle, with credit growth running ahead of deposit growth and pushing loan-to-deposit ratios to elevated levels, forcing banks to compete harder on term deposit pricing and lean on certificates of deposit and wholesale funding. A release showing deposits catching up, if sustained, eases that funding competition, relieves pressure at the shorter end of bank funding curves, and reduces one of the structural arguments the RBI has had for keeping system liquidity tight. The first question is whether the jump is genuine or a base-effect and seasonal artefact, since single fortnightly prints in this series are noisy and revisions and reversion are common. The follow-ons are the credit growth print in the same release set, the CD issuance pace and deposit rate behaviour at the large private banks, and any shift in the RBI's liquidity operations, since durable deposit improvement historically shows up there before it shows up in policy language. As one print, it is directional rather than conclusive.
