Context

India's weekly reserve stockpile is a flow series rather than a surprise data point: swings of this size week to week have historically reflected the RBI's dollar operations in USD/INR as much as valuation effects from the dollar and the non-dollar share of the portfolio, and the two are not separable from the headline alone. A rising print of this kind is consistent with the central bank buying dollars to lean against rupee strength, a pattern that has recurred whenever portfolio inflows or a softer dollar have pushed USD/INR toward the lower end of the range the RBI has tended to defend. The transmission channel for domestic rates runs through the liquidity consequence: dollar purchases inject rupee liquidity unless sterilised, which bears on money market rates and the short end rather than the belly of the government curve. The reserve cover metric, months of imports and short-term external debt, remains comfortably high by historical standards, so the series is read as an intervention gauge rather than a vulnerability gauge. The tells to follow are the spot behaviour of USD/INR around the figure and any offsetting liquidity operations in the RBI's subsequent money market actions.
