Weekly reserve prints from the RBI are routinely noisy, and a jump of this size within a single reporting week is more often an accounting story than an accumulation story: valuation effects from non-dollar holdings and, particularly, gold revaluation can move the headline by large amounts without a single dollar changing hands. The distinction worth drawing is between valuation-driven moves and genuine balance-of-payments inflows or spot intervention, since only the latter bears on rupee liquidity and the RBI's tolerance for currency weakness. In past episodes, sharp single-week swings of this kind have tended to coincide with revaluation or the maturing of earlier forward positions rather than a shift in intervention posture. The tells are the accompanying breakdown into foreign currency assets and gold, the forward book disclosed with a lag in the monthly bulletin, and whether the rupee's traded range that week was consistent with heavy dollar buying. A build of this scale, if genuine, would sit comfortably with the RBI's established pattern of absorbing inflows to rebuild buffers after periods of defence. As a weekly statistical release rather than a policy signal, it is context, not catalyst.
