Context

A second consecutive acceleration in manufactured-goods wholesale prices keeps India's WPI complex on the reaccelerating side of the recent range, though manufactured WPI has historically been the less policy-reactive component; the RBI's mandate is framed on headline CPI, and episodes where factory-gate inflation rose alone, without food and fuel pulling headline WPI and CPI with it, have tended to leave the policy rate untouched. The transmission question is pass-through: manufactured WPI leads core CPI only weakly and with a lag, so the distinction that matters is whether this reflects administered or commodity-linked input costs squeezing margins, which stays in PPI, or demand-pull pricing power, which eventually shows up in core consumer prints. Persistent strength in this series alongside rising input costs has in past cycles fed into the RBI's language on the output gap and core inflation stickiness well before it moved the rate itself. The follow-ons are the CPI release and the food and fuel sub-indices of the full WPI print, which determine whether this is a manufactured-goods story or a broader wholesale turn. As a single sub-index print, the signal is directional and second-tier for rates pricing.
