International Business Machines (IBM) EPS 16.8bln (exp. 2.86), Revenue 17.1bln (exp. 16.81bln); reaffirms FY revenue guidance; Raises outlook for full-year free cash flow.

What it means

The first tell in this print is the EPS line itself: a figure quoted in the tens of billions against a per-share consensus in low single digits is a units or labelling mismatch, or reflects a one-off item such as a divestiture gain or tax effect folded into GAAP earnings. Prints of this kind on IBM have a long history of headline distortion, and the established pattern is for the initial move to fade or reverse once the adjusted and continuing-operations numbers are separated from the one-offs in the release and call. The more durable signals sit underneath: revenue only modestly above consensus, full-year revenue guidance reaffirmed rather than raised, and the upgrade confined to free cash flow, a line IBM has tended to manage through working capital, capex timing and portfolio actions rather than pure operating acceleration. The segment split between software, consulting and infrastructure has been the swing factor in how these reports are ultimately digested, with recurring software growth carrying more weight than the lumpy consulting and hardware lines. The follow-ons are the reconciliation of the EPS figure on the call, any commentary on the transaction and backlog metrics in consulting, and whether the cash flow raise survives scrutiny of its composition. As a first reaction, the headline is less informative than it looks.
