A rise in the business activity subindex within an already expansionary services survey fits the established pattern of the US services sector carrying the cycle while the goods side fluctuates; in past episodes the services ISM has been the steadier of the two surveys, and its subindices have tended to move together rather than diverge for long. The distinction that matters for the read-through is between activity measures and the prices paid and employment components: a firm activity print alongside sticky prices paid has historically been the combination that leans against near-term easing at the front of the curve, whereas strength confined to activity with easing prices has been absorbed more calmly. Because business activity is a current-conditions gauge rather than a forward one, the new orders subindex in the same release is the tell for durability, and divergence between the two has in prior cycles preceded turns in the headline. Follow-ons are the labour report in the same week, which has typically dominated the rates reaction when the two conflict, and any commentary on backlog and supplier delivery components for signs of capacity strain. Absent an expectation benchmark in the headline, the print reads as an acceleration on the prior month rather than a surprise relative to consensus.
