Context
Final HICP prints are, as a rule, a confirmation exercise: the flash estimate is what reprices, and revisions at the final stage tend to be small enough that the rates market treats them as housekeeping. The notable feature here is the step up in the year-on-year rate from the prior month, a pattern that in recent European inflation episodes has more often reflected energy base effects and administered or regulated price resets in the Italian basket than a broadening of underlying pressure; the distinction that matters is between headline acceleration driven by energy and a pickup in core or services, since only the latter feeds the ECB's reaction function. The small overshoot versus consensus is within the range where final prints historically draw little response in BTPs or the BTP-Bund spread, which in this part of the cycle has been more sensitive to supply, fiscal signals and ECB commentary than to a single national CPI. The follow-ons that carry information are the core and services components, the corresponding prints from the larger euro-area states, and the aggregated euro-area HICP, since it is the bloc-wide figure rather than any one member's that moves the policy path. As a final reading of a national index, the signal is modest and largely absorbed unless the composition surprises.
