Italian S&P Global Composite PMI (Jul) 52.5 (Prev. 50.8)
- "We are yet to see a full recovery in business sentiment across the sector, however, as respondents look to the future with doubt given continued geopolitical uncertainty."
A composite print moving further into expansion and accelerating from the prior month is the kind of sequential improvement that, in past episodes, has mattered less for the single currency than the flash readings for the bloc's larger economies that preceded it, since Italy's PMI typically lands after the euro area flash and largely confirms or shades a picture already priced. The distinction worth drawing is between the headline index and its composition: an expansion driven by services against a flat manufacturing line reads differently for the growth mix than one with breadth across both, and the survey's own language on incomplete sentiment recovery and forward-looking doubt is the standard caveat that has accompanied recoveries where orders lag output. For rates, a run of firm peripheral prints has historically fed into the growth side of the ECB reaction function rather than shifting near-term pricing on its own. The follow-ons are the final euro area composite revision, any divergence versus the flash, and whether the momentum holds in the next monthly round.
