Context

For the periphery, services PMIs have carried more signal than manufacturing for some time, since the euro area's divergence between a weak goods sector and a resilient services one has been the defining pattern, and Italy's prints have fed directly into the periphery growth narrative that underpins the BTP-bund spread. The transmission channel here is narrow: single-country PMIs tend to move domestic assets only modestly, with the composite euro area reading and the subsequent national prints from Germany and France mattering more for the euro and for EGB pricing than Italy alone. The distinction worth drawing is between momentum that is domestically driven, which tightens the spread, and momentum that simply tracks the broader bloc, which does not. Follow-ons are the euro area composite revision and whether the beat broadens into employment and new orders subindices in subsequent months, the components that have historically distinguished durable services strength from a one-month bounce. A second consecutive acceleration raises the bar for any near-term ECB easing path being priced off peripheral weakness.
