Context

A services miss of this size, with the prior month's strong reading unwound, fits the recurring pattern in peripheral European PMIs where late-summer resilience has repeatedly given way to softer autumn prints; the composite will now hinge on which of manufacturing or services is carrying the drag. What matters for rates pricing is whether the weakness is demand-side or a seasonal correction in tourism-linked categories, since the former feeds the growth leg of the ECB reaction function while the latter has historically been faded. The transmission runs through the periphery spread: soft Italian activity data has in past episodes widened BTP-bund at the margin, particularly where it lands alongside weak prints from the core rather than in isolation. The follow-ons are the composite revision, the equivalent releases elsewhere in the euro area the same session, and whether the miss shows up in the employment and new orders sub-indices, which tend to lead the headline. Single-month PMI misses in this range have more often been noise than trend; two consecutive soft prints is usually where positioning starts to shift. As a preliminary-style diffusion print, the signal is directional rather than conclusive.
