Japanese authorities have historically escalated through a recognisable sequence, from routine orderliness remarks, to references to excessive or speculative moves, then to warnings of readiness to act, with actual yen-buying intervention tending to follow only after repeated escalation and a rapid one-way move, and typically in coordination with the Bank of Japan acting as agent. The signal here is the official discomfort threshold rather than any commitment, and episodes of this kind have tended to slow momentum rather than reverse a trend; unilateral Japanese intervention has generally produced sharp but temporary yen bounces that fade where the interest rate differential driving the move remains intact. The tells that distinguish mere posture from genuine intent are whether the language hardens toward describing moves as speculative, whether the vice-minister for international affairs takes over the commentary, and whether rate-check-type inquiries to dealers emerge, which have historically been the final step before action. What the FM says is worth weighing against the pace of the move, since the trigger in past episodes has been speed and one-sidedness more than any particular level. Until the rhetoric escalates, the differential channel that drives the pair remains the dominant force.
