This is the weekly Japanese international transactions flow, one of the few real-time reads on the recycling of Japanese capital into overseas debt, and it arrives regularly enough that a single print rarely moves anything on its own.

The distinction that matters in this series is between active selling, repatriation ahead of fiscal half-year or year-end book closure, and simple coupon reinvestment gaps, since the flows have historically been lumpy and the prior week's much larger outflow being followed by a smaller one is consistent with ordinary week-to-week noise rather than a trend shift. The channel through which these prints have mattered is the yen and the long end of core rates: persistent Japanese selling of foreign bonds, typically when FX-hedged returns on Treasuries or European debt turn deeply negative, has on past occasions added to upward pressure on overseas yields and lent support to the yen via repatriation, while unhedged buying episodes have done the reverse. What separates signal from noise is the multi-week cumulative trend and the hedging calculus, driven by the cross-currency basis and the domestic versus foreign yield differential, rather than any single week's number. Worth tracking alongside this are the companion figures on foreign buying of Japanese bonds and equities, which together show whether flows are a Japan story or a global one.
