Context

The transmission channel is the FX and rates link: sustained Japanese buying of overseas debt has historically been associated with yen softness and support for foreign long-end yields, while episodes of repatriation have run the other way, so the distinction that matters is between a one-week spike, often month-start or coupon-reinvestment related, and the start of a persistent trend. A single week's number in this series is noisy and prone to reversal in the following print; the established pattern is that only a run of several consecutive weeks in the same direction tends to move USD/JPY or core bond markets durably. Fiscal half-year positioning, hedging costs, and the yield pickup available unhedged versus hedged are the usual drivers named when flows of this size appear. The follow-ons are the next week's print for confirmation or mean reversion, the accompanying domestic flow lines for symmetry, and any shift in hedge ratios signalled by the futures positioning data. As flow data rather than a policy signal, the read is directional at best until the series confirms.
