Context

Japanese flash PMIs of this kind have historically been taken as directional rather than definitive: the flash is compiled from a partial survey panel and the final release has, on past occasions, revised the headline either way, so the initial print tends to set tone rather than settle it. The distinction that has mattered in comparable episodes is between a moderation within expansion, as here, and a slip through the 50 line; the former has typically produced muted moves in the yen and JGBs, the latter a more decisive repricing of the policy path. The composition is the tell: a slowdown led by manufacturing against resilient services reads differently for the Bank of Japan than broad-based softening, since the bank's tightening bias has rested on services prices and wage pass-through rather than the factory cycle. The follow-ons are the sector detail in the final release, the input and output price sub-indices given their read-across to the BoJ's next meeting, and the Tankan as the corroborating series.
