Japanese Overtime Pay YoY (Jun) Y/Y 2.80% (Prev. 2.9%)
What it means
Overtime pay sits inside Japan's monthly labour survey as a secondary read on wage momentum, watched less for its own level than for what it says about the cash-earnings cycle that underpins the BoJ's case for normalisation. In past tightening debates in Tokyo, the pattern has been that headline scheduled pay and base-salary components carry the argument, while overtime figures act as a cyclical corroborator: firm overtime pay has tended to signal manufacturing and export-sector demand holding up, soft prints the reverse. A marginal deceleration against the prior reading, as here, has historically moved nothing on its own; the series is volatile month to month and is routinely revised in the fuller earnings data that follow. The transmission channel when these prints do matter runs through rate expectations at the front end of the JGB curve and, via that, the yen, rather than through the commodity and metals groupings attached to the tag set, which reflect the series' use as an industrial-activity proxy. What tends to matter next is the accompanying labour-cash-earnings detail, particularly base pay and bonus components, and whether BoJ commentary in subsequent sessions treats the wage trend as intact.
