Context

Final PMI prints in Japan are a confirmation exercise rather than a market event: the flash reading, released roughly two weeks earlier, is what reprices rates and the yen, and final revisions of this size sit well inside the noise band that typically separates the two. A composite holding above 50 continues the pattern of recent Japanese surveys, where services activity has carried the headline while manufacturing has lagged, and the split between the two sub-indices is generally more informative than the headline itself. The transmission channel for a small downside surprise is usually limited to the short end of JGBs and incremental yen moves, and even there the response tends to fade when the revision is marginal. The more consequential read-through is to the Bank of Japan's reaction function: sustained composite readings in expansionary territory, alongside wage and services price components within these surveys, are the kind of evidence the bank has historically cited when normalising policy. The follow-ons worth noting are the detailed sub-indices on input and output prices, and how this print lines up with the Tankan survey that the BoJ watches most closely.
