Context

Final services PMI prints of this kind rarely reprice anything on their own: the final reading is a revision to the flash estimate released earlier in the month, and the market's reaction to the flash has typically already occurred, so the information content of the final lies in the direction and size of the revision rather than the level itself. A fractional downward revision of a couple of tenths, with the index still above the 50 line, sits within the noise band that has historically been ignored in yen rates and FX; what has tended to matter for the policy debate is the trend across services and manufacturing taken together, since the Bank of Japan has historically leaned on sustained services strength and the price and employment subindices as evidence for normalisation. The details worth noting in episodes of this kind are the input and output price components and new business, which feed the Bank's assessment of whether services inflation is demand-led. The follow-on calendar is the Tankan, Tokyo CPI as the lead indicator for the national print, and the next flash PMI, all of which carry more weight than a final revision. As a marginal miss against a stable prior, this sits in the category of confirmations rather than signals.
