Korea (Republic of) S&P Global Manufacturing PMI (Jul) 53.1 (Prev. 52.1)
A second consecutive print above 50 extends Korea's manufacturing expansion, and the direction of the move matters more than the level: readings that build on a prior expansionary print have historically carried more signal for the export cycle than a one-off bounce off the breakeven line. Korea's PMI sits early in the regional data calendar and is read as a high-frequency proxy for the North Asian tech and semiconductor pipeline, so the subindices, particularly new export orders, tend to matter more to follow-through than the headline. The usual transmission is through KRW and the KOSPI's export-heavy names rather than rates, with the Bank of Korea's policy path more sensitive to inflation and household credit than to a single sentiment survey. Worth noting is the distinction between this diffusion series and the hard trade data: Korean customs exports, released on a faster cadence than most peers, have on past occasions either confirmed or contradicted the PMI signal within weeks, and that cross-check is the standard tell. As a second-tier release, the pattern in comparable episodes is a modest initial FX move that fades unless corroborated by the regional PMI batch or the trade prints.
