Context

Multi-year offtake agreements of this kind have become the standard mechanism through which Korean cell makers secure cathode supply, and they have historically mattered more for the supplier than the buyer: for the cathode producer the contract converts capacity expansion into visible, bankable revenue, while for the cell maker the economics are largely unchanged unless pricing terms differ from spot. The notable element here is the chemistry. Korean battery makers built their franchises on high-nickel chemistries, and LFP volume commitments have previously signalled an effort to defend share in the lower-cost segment where Chinese producers dominate and where western automakers have been shifting entry-level models. Sourcing LFP cathode from a domestic Korean supplier rather than a Chinese one also fits the pattern of supply-chain localisation driven by subsidy eligibility rules in the US, which have penalised Chinese content. The usual sequence after such deals is a capacity announcement from the supplier, then qualification timelines, with revenue only materialising once plants are certified. Worth watching are the contract's pricing basis, whether volume is committed or conditional, and any parallel capacity or funding announcements from the cathode maker, since past episodes of this kind have occasionally seen order values revised down as end-demand shifted.
