APAC Stocks: Mixed
- Asia-Pac stocks are mixed as the region takes its cue from the similar performance stateside, where participants digested a slew of data, and yields continued to climb despite softer PCE data, while markets in Mainland China and Hong Kong are shut for the National Day holiday.
ASX 200: -1.7%
- Underperforms with all sectors in the red and the downside led by weakness in energy, real estate and defensives, while a return to growth in Australian Exports and Imports did little to inspire.
Nikkei 225: +2.5%
- Rallied with chip-related stocks boosted following strong earnings from Micron, while participants also reflected on the BoJ Tankan survey, which showed sentiment among Large Manufacturers improved but missed forecasts, and coupled with the recent weak activity data, supports the argument for BoJ patience.
KOSPI +0.9%
- Shrugged off the initial weakness and climbed into the green as tech-related momentum began to pick up, while US President Trump recently unveiled plans for South Korea to invest USD 200bln in energy projects in the US as part of South Korea's investment pledge that got auto tariffs reduced from 25% to 15%.
US Equity Futures: Positive
- Rebounded overnight with Nasdaq futures extending on recent outperformance post-Micron earnings.
European Equity Futures -0.6%
- Indicate a lower cash market open with Euro Stoxx 50 futures down 0.6% after the cash market closed with losses of 0.8% on Wednesday.
Sessions of this kind, where the region trades off a mixed US lead with yields rising despite a soft inflation print, typically resolve into a question of what is driving the rates move: stronger growth repricing tends to leave equities tolerant of higher yields, while supply or term-premium driven back-ups have historically pressured rate-sensitive sectors first, consistent with the energy, real estate and defensives underperformance in the ASX. The semiconductor read-across from a strong Micron print is a well-worn transmission channel: Asian chip names in the memory and equipment peer set tend to trade as a block on such results, which fits the Nikkei's chip-led rally and the KOSPI's late reversal. With Mainland China and Hong Kong shut, regional liquidity is thinned and price action carries less information about onshore sentiment, a pattern that has historically made APAC moves during the holiday prone to partial retracement on the reopen. The Tankan miss alongside weak activity data keeps the BoJ-patience framing intact, which has in past episodes capped yen downside and supported domestic equities via the currency channel rather than the rates one. The Korea investment pledge and tariff reduction fits the established sequence of bilateral announcements where headline figures are large but implementation details, timing and conditionality determine whether the initial equity response holds. The follow-ons are the US cash session's treatment of the yield move, any commentary on the financing side of the Korea pledge, and positioning ahead of the mainland reopen.
