[MARKET ANALYSIS] Complex capped by energy; T-notes dip after Tuesday's bull-flattening

Newsquawk Staff ·

T-notes are slightly lower in a 105-06+ to 105-10+ range, after Tuesday's bull-flattening saw them settle 2 ticks higher at 105-10, with overnight price action a function of energy.

JGB futures are slightly lower amid higher oil prices, with the 10yr JGB futures in a 125.71-126.01 range after softer-than-expected Japanese trade data, while the BoJ's JGB purchase operations were in line with planned Q4 amounts.

Bund futures are at the bottom of a relatively narrow 121.47-121.55 range as crude benchmarks ticked higher overnight

What it means

Overnight sessions where global duration trades off crude rather than rates-specific news follow a familiar template: the energy leg is an inflation-breakeven channel, and it tends to hit the long end and inflation-linked sectors first, which is consistent with the flattening unwind implied here after a bull-flattening session. A one-tick-to-two-tick drift in T-notes inside a narrow range after a larger prior-day move is typical consolidation price action and carries little signal on its own; the prior flattening, not the overnight dip, is the directional information. On the Japanese leg, softer trade data would ordinarily support JGBs, so the lower futures print points to the oil impulse dominating the data impulse, and the in-line purchase operation removes any supply-side surprise from the equation. The split worth drawing is between moves driven by energy, which retrace if crude fades, and moves driven by domestic policy signals, which tend to persist; nothing in the Bund's narrow range suggests a European-specific driver is in play. The follow-ons that have historically mattered in this setup are whether crude holds the overnight gains into the cash session, any revision to the purchase schedule at the next operation, and whether the flattening resumes once US participants return.
