[MARKET ANALYSIS] European equities open firmer; Rio Tinto (-2%) & Glencore (+8%) resume merger talks

Importance
Level 1
  • European equities have opened mostly on a strong footing, tracking tailwind from APAC which finished higher after tentative trade during most part of the session. The CAC 40 (+0.5%) and the AEX (+1.4%) outperform with the French index, being boosted by gains in L’Oreal (+4.2%) and BNP Paribas (+3.3%) due to broker upgrades, whilst the Dutch index was underpinned by tech giant ASML (+4.4%) due to the Co. gaining momentum from strong Q4 TSMC earnings. One of the main stories on the equity front has been the mining industry, with Rio Tinto (-2.8%) and Glencore (+8.4%) resuming talks on a mining megadeal which could see both company merge to create a mining behemoth with an enterprise value of more than USD 260bln.
  • European sectors have opened slightly skewed to the green. Leading sectors are Technology (+1.9%), Consumer Products & Services (+1.8%) and Energy +(1.5%). Upswing in sentiment for tech has been charged by gains in ASML whilst Consumer Products & Services has been boosted by gains in L’Oreal and increase in underlying crude prices has strengthened the Energy sector. On the flip side, Insurance (-1.3%), Real Estate (-0.8%) and Travel & Leisure (-0.4%) are underperforming. Losses in IAG after CFO Cadbury has decided to step down, has weighed down the travel sectors, whilst losses on Allianz, has pinned down the insurance sector.
  • Movers this morning include Antofagasta (+3.0%) with the Co. gaining after a broker upgrade. This uptick has also elevated the Basic Resource sector (+1.5%). On the downside, Aviva’s (-1.5%) shares have slipped, following a broker downgrade, this has also further weighed down the Insurance sector.
  • US equity futures are lower/flat in the premarket. The RTY (-0.1%) is slightly lower, whilst the NQ, YM and ES are flat. Not much news thus far in the early premarket hours. However, ahead all eyes will be on the NFP data, a potential Supreme Court ruling and US Michigan Consumer Sentiment Preliminary.
