WTI/Brent: WTI Nov'26 -0.8% / Brent Dec'26 -0.60%

  • Oil futures retreated overnight after yesterday's divergence, in which US crude outperformed its North Sea counterpart following the large weekly US headline inventory drawdown and with the US telling IEA member countries it is unhappy with the planned emergency oil release, while it suggested supplementing it with a further 100mln barrels.

Gold: -0.2%

  • Pared some of its gains as the dollar found some reprieve from recent selling pressure.

Copper: +0.8%

  • Steadily climbed amid the mostly positive risk sentiment in Asia.

Context

The mixed US versus North Sea performance is a familiar pattern around large US inventory draws: domestic crude tightens the WTI structure while Brent, more exposed to seaborne balances and political supply decisions, lags, and the spread between the two benchmarks tends to absorb the divergence rather than outright levels. The more durable thread is the reported US unhappiness with the IEA-coordinated emergency release and the suggestion of supplementing it with additional barrels. Coordinated strategic releases have historically had a chequered record on flat price: the announcement effect has often faded within sessions as traders recalibrate against actual delivery volumes and timing, while intra-market structure and differentials have tended to carry the signal longer. A US push to enlarge the release shifts the question from headline size to execution, namely how much physical crude actually reaches the market and over what period, and how OPEC and other producers respond at the margin. Worth noting that such episodes have frequently coincided with producer signalling in the opposite direction, which has muddied the net supply read. Near-term follow-ons are confirmation of release volumes and timing, subsequent weekly inventory prints for whether the draw was noise or trend, and the WTI-Brent spread as the cleanest expression of the domestic tightening story. The gold and copper moves are secondary, tracking dollar direction and Asia risk tone rather than any commodity-specific driver.
