[MARKET ANALYSIS] T-note futures take a breather after the recent oil-driven moves

Newsquawk Staff ·

USTs: +0.5 ticks

  • Takes a breather after yesterday's somewhat choppy price action as they continued to track swings in oil prices, while economic data had little lasting impact, with participants awaiting the latest NFP report on Friday.

Bunds: +6 ticks

  • Remains afloat but with upside capped following recent supply and as oil bounces off this week's trough, while German Factory Orders data is scheduled today.

JGBs: +24 ticks

  • Climbed higher amid the downbeat mood in Tokyo, but are off today's best levels, with attention turning to a looming 30yr auction from Japan.

What it means

This is a consolidation session, not a signal one: Treasuries treading water after an oil-driven stretch is a recurring pattern in which rates take their cue from crude's pass-through to inflation expectations until a labour report resets the narrative, and data prints in the interim tend to fade quickly. The distinction worth drawing is between price action driven by the energy impulse, which reverses with the commodity, and that driven by the domestic data calendar, which is what payrolls will test. On the European side, capped upside in Bunds after recent supply is the familiar indigestion sequence, where auctions weigh until the concession is absorbed, and the bounce in crude off its trough removes the disinflationary tailwind that had been doing the work. The near-term calendar is doing the heavy lifting: the Japanese long-end auction is the standard supply risk where a weak tail at the super-long sector has historically bled into global duration, and Friday's US employment report is the event that determines whether the oil linkage persists or yields revert to tracking the domestic cycle. As a session note, the information content is directional rather than dispositive.
