Context

Broad yen appreciation of this kind, with USD/JPY taking out a prior swing low and EUR/JPY following, has historically split into two cases: position unwinds driven by a narrowing of the rate differential versus the US, and episodes where official tolerance for a weak yen runs out and jawboning turns into actual intervention. The tell that distinguishes them is speed and funding: intervention-adjacent moves tend to be sharp, concentrated in Tokyo hours, and accompanied by Ministry of Finance commentary, while differential-driven moves track the front-end spread and the repricing of policy expectations on both sides. Breaching a previous low matters technically because it flushes residual long-dollar positioning and invites momentum participation, which is the phase where authorities have previously stepped in given that rapidity, not level alone, is what their public remarks have cited. Worth noting is what the yen is doing against the wider G10 rather than the dollar alone, since strength confined to USD/JPY points to a dollar story, while uniform yen gains point to a Japan-side catalyst or carry unwind. The follow-ons are any change in tone from Japanese officials, the pace of the move versus past episodes that drew a response, and whether US yields are leading or following.
