[MARKET UPDATE] Energy lifts, Brent Jan'27 back into the green, weighing on European equity futures (FTSE 100 -1.0%) and fixed income benchmarks, lifting yields and in-turn the USD
Oil-led sessions of this kind follow a well-worn cross-asset sequence: a firmer crude tape feeds the inflation impulse at the front of European curves, gilt and bund yields back up, and rate differentials pull the dollar higher while equity futures soften on the margin compression read-through.

The far-dated contract trading back into positive territory matters for the term structure read, since moves driven out the curve point to a supply or geopolitical repricing rather than a prompt physical squeeze, and the two have historically behaved differently in duration. The FTSE underperforming the broader European tape is the established pattern when crude rallies, given the index's heavy energy weighting cuts both ways but its rate-sensitive and domestically exposed names tend to dominate on days when yields are the binding constraint. The tell for whether the move has legs is whether the bid in crude survives the US session and whether the curve move is bear-flattening (policy repricing, more durable for the dollar) or bear-steepening (term premium, less so). Worth noting is that episodes where oil drives rates rather than the reverse have tended to fade unless confirmed by a concrete supply-side development, so the absence or presence of an accompanying catalyst is the first thing the tape will be tested against.
