Context

Sudden, unexplained JPY strength of this kind has a familiar precedent set: either a Ministry of Finance rate check, actual intervention, or a large flow in thin liquidity. The distinction matters for what follows. A rate check, where officials call dealers to ask for prices, has historically served as a warning shot and tends to produce a sharp but often fading move unless it is followed by actual buying of yen; confirmed intervention has produced larger and more durable repricing, particularly when coordinated or conducted at levels the authorities have publicly flagged. The pattern in past episodes is an initial spike in JPY, a test of whether official confirmation or denial follows within the hour, and then a drift back toward the prior level if no action materialises. The tells are any comment from finance ministry or BOJ officials, the speed of the move relative to the session's prevailing liquidity, and whether the move extends beyond the very front of JPY crosses into a broader risk bid. Absent confirmation, unexplained bursts of this kind have frequently been retraced.
