Context

Mexican reserve prints are the Banco de Mexico's monthly balance-sheet disclosure and, absent a sharp directional break, the read-through is usually to the peso's carry and to the central bank's sterilization operations rather than to any immediate policy signal. A decline of this size on the month is within the normal range for this series and has historically been read as routine reserve management; what has mattered in past episodes of genuine FX stress is a sustained drawdown, not a single soft print, because the peso remains a heavily traded carry vehicle where the yield differential with the dollar dominates positioning. The relevant comparison is with the pace of reserve accumulation during periods when the central bank was actively rebuilding buffers after prior intervention episodes, since a break in that pattern, not this month's level, would be the early warning. The next data point is the subsequent monthly print: one soft month in isolation has tended to mean little, while two or three consecutive declines alongside wider short-dated peso volatility would mark a shift in the balance of risks. As a standalone release this is second-tier for MXN and usually passes without a durable repricing.
