New Zealand ANZ Commodity Prices (Aug) -0.4% (Prev. -4.0%)

The moderating month-on-month decline, from a deep prior fall to a shallow one, is consistent with the familiar pattern of commodity down-legs decelerating before a base forms, though a single month's deceleration says little about the turn. The more consequential decomposition is dairy, which dominates the basket and is tracked in near real time through the GlobalDairyTrade auctions; episodes where the monthly index and the auction results diverge have historically resolved toward the auction series. The RBNZ has tended to look through commodity swings of this magnitude unless they feed through to incomes and inflation expectations, so the follow-ons are the next GDT events and any shift in the terms-of-trade assumptions in the Bank's forecasts. As a data point, the signal is directional rather than decisive.
