Context

A rise in the New Zealand composite performance index, from 52.5 to 53.4, leaves the survey comfortably in expansionary territory and points to a broadening of activity beyond the manufacturing leg, which in this economy has historically been the weaker and more volatile component. Prints of this kind in the mid-50s have tended to confirm rather than reprice: the NZ rates market is far more sensitive to the central bank's own communications, quarterly CPI, and labour data than to diffusion surveys, and single-month moves within the expansion range rarely shift the policy path on their own. The more informative tell has usually been the composition, whether the lift is coming from activity and new orders or from the employment and prices subindices, since it is the latter pair that feeds into the monetary authority's assessment of domestic capacity pressure and sticky non-tradables inflation. A sequence of composite readings holding above the breakeven level has in past episodes reinforced a higher-for-longer bias in a small, externally exposed economy where the exchange rate does much of the tightening work. Worth noting is that NZD reaction to domestic survey data has typically been modest and short-lived relative to moves driven by global risk appetite and China-linked commodity sentiment, the dominant drivers of the currency.
