Context

Electronic card spending is New Zealand's timeliest consumption proxy, a partial read that captures card-present and card-not-present transactions but omits cash and parts of services, so it tends to lead the quarterly retail trade and household consumption figures rather than settle them. A shallower contraction than the prior month points to sequential stabilisation in nominal spending, though the series is volatile month to month and has a long history of single-print reversals, which is why the trend across two or three prints carries more weight than any one reading. The transmission channel is the consumption leg of growth feeding into the RBNZ's domestic demand assessment, and the distinction that matters for rates pricing is nominal versus real: in periods of elevated inflation, flat nominal card spending has implied a contracting real consumer, while the same print in a disinflationary phase reads as stabilisation. Rates markets have historically responded to this series mainly when it breaks a run in one direction, with the front end of the New Zealand curve and the kiwi moving on surprises against the prevailing narrative rather than on the print itself. The follow-ons are the quarterly retail volumes release and the RBNZ's own consumption commentary, which have tended to confirm or fade the card data's signal.
