New Zealand GDT price index: +0.1% (prev. +1.5%)
What it means
The GlobalDairyTrade auction is the fortnightly reference event for global dairy pricing, and New Zealand's dominant position in internationally traded whole milk powder makes it a direct input into farmgate milk price forecasts and, at the margin, the NZD via the terms-of-trade channel. A deceleration from a strong prior gain to a near-flat print is consistent with an auction that has been losing momentum after a run of strength; in past episodes of this kind the kiwi response to a single soft auction has been limited, with sustained trends across three or more consecutive events rather than one print doing the work. The composition matters as much as the headline index: whole milk powder, given its weight in the basket and its relevance to Chinese import demand, typically drives the currency reaction, while butter and skim milk powder moves tend to pass with less notice. The follow-ons are whether the weakness is confirmed at the next event and how the print feeds into processors' milk price guidance, revisions to which have historically been the more durable FX transmission. A 0.1% change sits within the range often treated as flat, so the signal is one of fading momentum rather than a directional break.
