New Zealand GDT Price Index +3% (prev. +2.5%)
What it means
A modest firming in the GlobalDairyTrade index, extending a run of positive auctions. The GDT is the benchmark clearing mechanism for globally traded dairy and the primary input into the farm-gate milk price, so a rising index reads through to New Zealand terms of trade and, at the margin, to the NZD, which has historically tracked whole milk powder direction reasonably closely. The whole milk powder and butter components matter more than the headline: WMP carries the bulk of auction volume and the product mix determines whether a positive print is broad-based or driven by one line. Chinese and wider Asian buying at the auction has been the swing factor in past episodes; a firm result against subdued Chinese demand tends to be taken as more constructive than one that merely reflects it. Follow-ons worth noting are the subsequent auction for confirmation of trend, Fonterra's milk price guidance updates, and any supply-side developments from the New Zealand season, since sustained index strength has historically fed through to dairy exporter revenue and the currency with a lag rather than in the session itself.
