Context
The services PSI has spent an extended stretch hovering around the 50 breakeven line, and readings this close to flat have historically told the rate market little beyond confirming stagnation rather than contraction. A sub-one-point month-on-month drift is well within the survey's normal noise band, so the print tends to matter only where it extends or breaks an established run of above- or below-50 readings. For the RBNZ, services activity feeds the domestic demand side of the policy debate alongside the services component of CPI, and persistent sub-trend readings of this kind have in past cycles formed part of the case for a lower OCR rather than altered it on their own. The transmission runs through front-end OIS and the kiwi only at the margin on a print this close to consensus-free territory. What carries more weight is the sequence of quarterly CPI and labour data, and whether the business surveys' employment and pricing sub-indices corroborate the headline. The next tell is whether the companion manufacturing survey and the quarterly activity measures point the same way.
