Newsquawk Daily Economic Releases - 17th August 2026
- Data: Japanese GDP Prelim (Q2), Chinese Activity Data (Jul), Canadian Inflation (Jul)
- Speakers: ECB's Lane
This is a calendar preview rather than a print, so the note is about sequencing. The Asian session carries the heavier load: Japanese preliminary GDP and the Chinese monthly activity batch (industrial production, retail sales, fixed asset investment) have historically set the tone for regional FX and the metals complex, with the China numbers in particular tending to transmit through copper, iron ore and the AUD/CNH proxy channel rather than through rates. Canadian inflation follows in the North American session and has been the kind of release that moves the front end of the Canada curve and the loonie when it shifts the central bank's perceived reaction function, with the distinction worth drawing between headline softness and the core measures the bank actually weights. The ECB's Lane, as chief economist, has tended to be the more consequential voice when he speaks to the inflation outlook, and his remarks have a history of nudging front-end Eonia/OIS pricing when they stray from the prevailing committee tone. The interaction to note is whether the China data colour European cyclicals and commodities before Lane speaks, since weak activity prints have in past episodes framed the ECB commentary as more dovish than intended.
