APAC stocks mostly declined amid a tech sell-off following the mixed handover from Wall Street, where the Nasdaq underperformed as chip and memory names were pressured by China competition concerns after CXMT announced technological progress on a denser memory chip design. ASX 200 outperformed its regional peers with price action range-bound as the downside in tech and miners was offset by strength in energy, financials and defensive sectors. Nikkei 225 suffered from the tech-related pressure as participants returned from the long weekend. KOSPI slumped alongside the tech sell-off, with a sidecar triggered early on due to heavy losses. Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp conformed to the tech-led declines across the region, with weakness in autonames after reports that China will cut the VAT export tax rebate rate on new energy vehicles to 9% from 13%.

Context

A daily opening wrap of this kind is an aggregation exercise rather than a single catalyst; the precedent is that its constituent threads trade on their own merits through the session, with the overnight tone set by the Asian handover. The dominant regional driver here is a tech-led sell-off traceable to China competition concerns in memory chips, a pattern that has historically hit the KOSPI hardest given its concentration in memory names, and the sidecar trigger is consistent with how Korean circuit breakers have behaved in prior episodes of heavy semiconductor selling. The VAT rebate cut on Chinese new energy vehicle exports is a familiar policy lever, and comparable rebate adjustments in the past have pressured the domestic auto chain while being read as a signal of shifting fiscal support priorities. On the corporate side, the LVMH print is the bellwether item: luxury results with Asia-exposed Fashion & Leather Goods weakness against resilient US demand is a divergence that has recurred across recent luxury reporting seasons and tends to set the tone for the wider European discretionary complex. The Credit Agricole agreement to buy IKB, with the acquirer indicated lower, follows the standard pattern in announced bank M&A where the buyer absorbs the initial discount pending clarity on terms and integration cost. The follow-ons worth noting are whether the memory-chip pressure broadens into the wider semiconductor equipment chain at the European open, and how STMicroelectronics trades given its direct exposure to that complex.
