APAC stocks were lower across the board as the sell-off rolled over into the region following the losses stateside owing to the tech rout and hot CPI data. ASX 200 was slightly lower but with the downside limited as underperformance in tech and miners was offset by resilience in financials, telecoms and defensive sectors, while disappointing jobs data further lessened the likelihood of the central bank hiking rates again next month. Nikkei 225 slumped by more than 3000 points, with double-digit losses seen in several tech stocks. KOSPI was the worst performer and triggered circuit breakers after dropping as much as 8% owing to its large tech exposure and the ongoing bloodbath in the sector. Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp conformed to the broad-based tech-driven weakness, with recent stronger-than-expected lending data doing little to spur risk sentiment.

Context

This is a composite opening bulletin rather than a single event, and the useful read is in the internal pattern: a US-led tech rout following a hot CPI print has transmitted into APAC with the severity ranking tracking index tech weighting, the most tech-concentrated bourse falling far enough to trip circuit breakers while a financials and defensives-heavy index held up. That divergence is the standard cross-section in rate-shock episodes: duration-heavy growth names de-rate first, and rotation into staples, health and defensives shows up in sector performance before it shows up in index levels, which is exactly what the prior session's US sector tape displayed. The distinction that matters for the European open is whether the sell-off is valuation compression on discount rates alone or broadens into earnings concern; the prints in the bulletin itself, strong results from the semiconductor and networking complex alongside a consumer name flagging weakness in the US and China, argue for the former so far. Two items carry follow-on risk beyond the session: a major bank reportedly contingency-planning around its home capital regime, a story that in past episodes of this kind has run for months through political and regulatory channels, and reported government interest in taking a defence-sector stake, which fits the established pattern of states deepening ownership in strategic industries. Worth noting that single-day tech-led declines of this magnitude have historically produced a volatile follow-through session rather than a clean reversal, with the circuit-breaker trigger itself tending to concentrate selling into the resumption. The calendar tell is whether incoming inflation data keeps the repricing pressure on the long end.
