APAC stocks were mostly higher as global markets regained composure following the recent tech bloodbath. Elsewhere, Indonesian stocks are the outlier with double-digit percentage losses as the MSCI consults on a proposal to reclassify Indonesia from Emerging Market to a Standalone Market Status. ASX 200 gained with the upside led by tech and miners, while recent weak jobs data also supported the case for a pause from the RBA at the next meeting. Nikkei 225 recouped some of the losses from the prior day's turmoil. KOSPI outperformed but still has far to go after falling by as much as 8% yesterday. Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp conformed to the broad recovery in risk assets, while PBoC Governor Pan also recently reiterated that China would maintain a moderately loose monetary policy.

Context

A daily European opening wrap of this kind is less a single signal than a map of the session's idiosyncratic drivers, and the professional read is to separate the one-off corporate items from the stories with follow-through. The item with the clearest precedent is the UniCredit and Commerzbank authorisation: supervisory clearance to cross the threshold has historically been the gating step in intra-European bank consolidation, and episodes of this kind have tended to move from stake-building to the question of whether a full combination follows, with the acquirer's paper, the target's governance resistance and the host government's posture all in play. The Indonesia reclassification consultation is the second structural thread; index-provider reviews of market status have a well-worn sequence of consultation, interim feedback and implementation lag, during which flows front-run the decision and the affected market underperforms its regional peers regardless of local fundamentals. On the earnings side, the pattern across the prints is the familiar one of the cycle: capital-goods and data-centre-exposed names guiding up while consumer-facing and travel names trim, a dispersion that has historically mattered more for sector rotation than for index direction. The UK bank tax report fits the standard pre-Budget pattern of floated measures, denials and partial retreats, where the first move in domestic bank shares tends to overstate the eventual levy. What is worth watching is whether the Asia recovery holds into the European cash session and whether the MSCI consultation and the Commerzbank endgame generate formal follow-ons before month-end.
