APAC stocks were mixed following Friday's tech-led sell-off on Wall Street, with Japanese and Korean stocks underperforming amid continued pressure on AI and semiconductor names. However, losses were pared as US equity futures recovered alongside a pullback in crude prices. Sentiment was also supported by Trump's latest Russia-Ukraine peace efforts and easing of restrictions on Russian energy, while Chinese activity data generally topped expectations but prompted little reaction. ASX 200 bucked the regional weakness, supported by Cleanaway Waste Management surging after EQT agreed to acquire the Co. Elsewhere, RBA's Kent noted evidence of rising neutral interest rates in Australia and abroad. Nikkei 225 and KOSPI underperformed as tech stocks caught up with Friday's losses in their US counterparts, although the indices pared earlier losses of over 2%. For Japan, BoJ Governor Ueda also spoke overnight but offered little fresh. Shanghai Comp was marginally softer despite Chinese activity data generally topping expectations, although Fixed Asset Investment remained weak. Hang Seng was closed for the Chung Yeung Festival.

What it means

1 min read

This is the standard European opening wrap rather than a single event, so the read is composite. The dominant overnight thread is tech-led weakness spilling from a US session that saw growth-heavy indices underperform while defensives and energy outperformed, a rotation pattern that has typically characterised stretches where crowded AI and semiconductor positioning is unwound rather than a broad risk-off; the tell for that distinction is whether Japanese and Korean exporters pare losses on US futures, which they did, and whether European IT follows the US sector tape at the open. The second thread is crude easing on reported Russian energy sanction relief and peace overtures, a supply-headline dynamic that has historically faded without confirmed implementation, with freight and prompt spreads the cleaner signal than the headline itself. Chinese activity data topping expectations but drawing little reaction fits the established pattern of the market treating incremental beats as insufficient without follow-through on stimulus, the weak fixed asset investment print being the more informative line. Idiosyncratic catalysts dominate the European slate: a large cash takeover premium in Australian waste, a prelim beat and guidance raise from a German logistics bellwether that reads into global trade volumes, and a regulator probe into private credit loan marking at a UK bank, the latter being the item with the widest second-order read-across given how exposed the sector's capital ratios are to illiquid asset valuation. French civil unrest of this scale has tended to weigh on domestic-facing names and luxury only transiently unless it persists into the week. The session's follow-ons are any confirmation on the Russian energy measures, US futures holding the recovery, and whether the Barclays story draws peer scrutiny.
