ASIA
APAC stocks traded mixed following the continued tech rout stateside, where most major indices were negative, and the Nasdaq 100 dipped into a correction, although the majority of US sectors finished in the green and oil prices slumped 8% due to hopes for diplomacy, while demand was contained overnight amid the holiday closure in Japan and cautiousness heading into the US midterm elections. ASX 200 was indecisive heading into the RBA announcement, but finished in the green after the central bank hiked rates as expected, with the decision made by 6-3 votes, while it remained hawkish but stopped short of signalling a December hike. KOSPI underperformed following the tech rout stateside and despite the softer-than-expected CPI data, which printed 2.8% vs exp. 2.9%, but remained above the central bank's medium-term target. Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp traded mixed despite authorities launching a renewed effort to stabilise the stock market, including measures to boost liquidity, cut rates for share buy-back loans and ease curbs on leveraged trading.

What it means
This is the standing daily European opening wrap rather than a single event, and its market function is well established: it transmits the overnight US and APAC tape into the European cash open and flags the names where indicated prices on Tradegate diverge from last close. The dominant thread is the stateside tech rout, with the Nasdaq 100 entering correction territory while the equal-weight picture stayed constructive, a rotation pattern that in past episodes of this kind has seen European cyclicals and defensives outperform the growth-heavy indices at the open. The reported 8% slump in oil on diplomacy hopes is the largest single-asset move cited, and in comparable episodes an energy-led sector drag has weighed on the FTSE 100 and oil majors while relieving input-cost narratives for airlines and chemicals, both of which feature in the earnings slate. On the corporate side, the print pattern is mixed: beats with raised guidance at Bayer, Philips and Evonik against guidance cuts at Fresenius Medical Care and Hugo Boss, and the Apple after-hours drop on margin guidance frames the European semiconductor and hardware complex. The RBA hike on a split vote, with hawkish language but no commitment to the next meeting, follows the familiar sequence for late-cycle hiking central banks, where the market focus shifts to the vote split and the data dependency of the following decision. Worth watching as the session develops is whether the Oracle discounted equity offering and the AI-cost commentary in the US reports feed into the European software and semiconductor peer set, and whether the oil move holds through European energy sector pricing.
