APAC stocks eventually traded mixed after initially posting gains. The stocks lost steam heading into the European open despite a lack of newsflow at the time. ASX 200 index was led by outperformance in the top-weighted financial sector and miners, but with further gains capped amid quiet newsflow and mixed trade data. Nikkei 225 initially traded with cautious gains before faltering amid recent currency moves and hawkish BoJ rate hike bets following the recent commentary from BoJ Governor Ueda and hawkish dissenter Takata. KOSPI outperformed early in the session with some tech and energy names among the notable gainers. The index fell into red later in the session. Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp were mixed with some encouragement from stronger-than-expected Chinese RatingDog Services PMI data, although the PBoC's open market operations amount remained at zero. Both indices then traded in the red.

AI semiconductor revenue +221% Y/Y and +54% Q/Q to USD 16.7bln, driven by strong demand for custom AI accelerators and networking. Context

The US overnight items show the established AI-semis pattern of the last several reporting cycles: beats on the trailing quarter sold off when guidance or margins came in a shade light, while clean guide raises were bought aggressively. That asymmetry, punishing good-not-great prints while rewarding visibility, has been the defining feature of positioning at stretched valuations in the complex, and Broadcom and HPE fit it squarely, with memory and component supply now the binding constraint named repeatedly by managements. The second thread is the Bank of Japan: hawkish commentary from the Governor and a known dissenter has again fed hike pricing and yen strength, and episodes of that combination have historically acted as a drag on exporter-heavy indices and, at the extreme, on crowded carry positioning. European single-name flow is dominated by activist and M&A items, where the reliable sequence is an initial pop on the stake or bid headline followed by drift pending confirmation of intent and financing. Worth watching is whether BoJ pricing firms into the next policy meeting and whether the supply-constraint language from US hardware names broadens into memory and component pricing commentary.
