ASIA

APAC stocks traded mixed following the lacklustre handover from Wall St, where most major indices declined, and the Nasdaq underperformed as tech selling and AI-related concerns were stoked by a report that OpenAI's annual revenue was USD 20bln below previous estimates, at USD 50bln versus USD 70bln, although there have been a couple of reports since that have provided some clarification regarding this. ASX 200 was positive with the majority of sectors in the green, although gains were capped amid underperformance in telecoms and with commodity-related industries range-bound. Nikkei 225 declined at the open amid tech-related pressure and with the index also not helped by the closures of its tech-heavy counterparts in South Korea and Taiwan, but has since recouped most of the losses. Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp diverged amid mixed performances in tech stocks and with the mainland pressured after a paltry liquidity operation by the PBoC, while the subdued spending during the National Day holiday also raises questions regarding domestic demand in the Chinese economy.

Context

A daily European opening wrap of this kind aggregates an overnight Asian session, prior closes, and scattered single-stock catalysts rather than carrying one dominant print; the informational weight sits in the cross-currents. The overnight thread is AI-related skepticism in US tech, with conflicting revenue reporting around a large private AI developer producing the classic sequence of an initial selloff in the Nasdaq complex followed by partial clarification and stabilization, a pattern that has recurred whenever private-company AI financials leak into public markets. The China thread combines a restrained central bank liquidity operation with soft holiday spending data, the combination that has historically weighed on mainland and Hong Kong indices and on the European names with Chinese demand exposure, luxury and autos foremost. Single-name items carry their own established playbooks: US Gulf of Mexico storm shut-ins at BP and Shell affect near-term crude and product supply at the margin and typically retrace once facilities restart; a German automaker flagged for a possible profit warning extends a familiar pattern of guidance resets across the European car sector; and a large spectrum purchase by a satellite operator challenging incumbent US wireless carriers is the kind of structural telecom story that reprices the US carrier peer set in after-hours first. The follow-ons worth noting are any confirmation or denial of the AI revenue figures, further PBoC operations, storm damage assessments in the Gulf, and the European open's reaction to the automaker warning speculation and broker downgrades clustered in UK and German mid-caps.
