Context

NFIB optimism is a second-tier small business survey, historically more directional for sentiment than for data-conditional repricing. A print essentially in line with consensus, after a modest step down from the prior month, tends to be filtered out quickly by rate markets; the survey has moved the front end on rare occasions when it delivered a genuine surprise in hiring or pricing intentions rather than on the headline index itself. The more informative components, plans to hire, compensation plans, and prices received versus prices paid, feed the pass-through chain that matters for the inflation side of the mandate, and small business labour data in this survey have at times led broader payrolls readings at turning points. Following a string of soft readings, a decline of this size is consistent with the established pattern of small firms under margin and credit pressure responding more sensitively than large cap peers to tighter policy. Attention now shifts to the same day's larger surveys and the next labour prints, where confirmation or divergence will matter more than this index alone.
