Context

Hurricane-driven crude and product moves are, on precedent, track-dependent rather than intensity-dependent: the market has historically cared less about sustained wind speed in the abstract than about whether the storm's cone intersects Gulf of Mexico production platforms, Gulf Coast refining capacity, or the import and export terminals along that coastline. Storms that stay offshore or make landfall away from energy infrastructure have tended to produce brief, faded spikes; those that force platform evacuations and refinery shutdowns have tightened prompt supply for days to weeks, with the effect concentrated in front-month spreads, Gulf cash differentials, and gasoline cracks rather than flat price alone. The relevant tells from here are the successive NHC advisories, specifically any westward shift in the projected path toward offshore production zones, and operator announcements of shut-ins, which have typically preceded the larger moves. Refinery exposure matters as much as upstream: past episodes in which refining capacity went offline showed products outperforming crude, a distinction worth drawing explicitly if the cone evolves. Until landfall risk to infrastructure is confirmed, the established pattern is for the storm premium to remain modest and liable to rapid unwinding.
