Pakistan's Defence Minister says time has come to implement Mecca pact following Houthi attacks, Al Jazeera reports
Statements of this kind from a Pakistani defence official matter less for their immediate operational content than for what they signal about how a nuclear-armed Muslim state with long-standing Saudi security ties intends to position itself in the Red Sea crisis.

The referenced Mecca pact, a declaration associated with an OIC summit convened in the Saudi holy city, commits members to collective positions on regional security and terrorism, and invoking it publicly is the standard first step in building religious and diplomatic cover before any tangible contribution, whether naval, financial, or rhetorical. The usual sequence in comparable episodes has been declaration, then consultation with Riyadh and Western partners, then a defined and often limited material role, with Pakistan historically calibrating involvement to its domestic politics and its dependence on Gulf financing. Pakistan's prior form is relevant: it has declined direct participation in past Gulf coalition operations while providing quieter forms of support, and parliamentary and street opinion have constrained overt alignment against fellow Muslim actors, which cuts both ways given Houthi framing. The transmission channel for markets runs through the Red Sea shipping disruption itself, freight rates, war-risk insurance, and transit times around the Cape, rather than through Pakistani assets directly. Worth watching is whether the language is followed by any force contribution, port or logistics arrangements, or a coordinated OIC statement, and whether other signatory states echo the call.
