Context

Daily open market operations of this kind are the PBoC's routine liquidity management tool rather than a policy signal, and the informational content sits almost entirely in two places: the net injection after maturing volumes, and the rate. A gross injection figure without the offsetting expiry schedule says little on its own; the operation can be a large gross number and still a net drain. The unchanged 7-day rate, which now functions as the bank's primary policy anchor following the reorientation of its framework away from the medium-term lending facility, is the element that carries the signal, and a steady reading there has historically been the default expectation rather than news. Where these operations have mattered in the past is around quarter-end, tax payment periods and heavy government bond issuance, when funding demand rises and the scale of injections becomes a tell for how tightly the bank intends to run interbank liquidity. The follow-ons are the 7-day fixing against DR007, the net weekly liquidity position, and whether any rate adjustment appears first here or is held for the loan prime rate fixings.
