Context

Daily 7-day reverse repo operations are the PBoC's routine liquidity management tool, and the operative signal in these prints is almost never the size, which largely offsets maturing volumes, but the rate. An unchanged rate keeps the operation in housekeeping territory; in past episodes, shifts in the 7-day rate have served as the primary policy signal, often preceding adjustments to the loan prime rates that price the bulk of new lending. The split worth drawing is between net injection and net drain once maturities are accounted for, since the gross figure on its own says little about the marginal stance. Episodes where the PBoC has wanted to ease have historically shown up first in the rate rather than the volume, and where it has wanted to lean against yuan weakness or leverage it has tended to drain quietly rather than move the headline rate. The follow-ons that matter are the monthly LPR fixings and any medium-term lending facility operations, where term funding costs are set. As a routine operation at an unchanged rate, the information content is low.
