PBoC is expected to set the USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7379 (prev. 6.7904)
The daily fix is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument, and the analytical content is rarely the level itself but the deviation from modelled estimates derived from the prior close and the currency basket. A midpoint set materially firmer than models implied has historically been read as leaning against depreciation pressure, while a fix in line with estimates signals the bank is letting market forces run within the band; that gap, not the print, is what desks have learned to trade around. A firmer fix versus the previous day also mechanically anchors the onshore band around a stronger centre, which feeds through to the offshore CNH spread as the cleaner read on positioning pressure. In episodes where the fix has been used to resist depreciation over consecutive sessions, the pattern has been that sustained fix-side resistance eventually shows up in state bank flow and in the gap between spot and the band's edge rather than in any single morning's print. Worth noting that a stronger midpoint on a weaker dollar backdrop can simply track the basket mechanism rather than carry policy intent, so the reference basket's composition matters for interpretation. The follow-ons are the opening onshore spot relative to the band, the CNH-CNY spread, and whether the fixing bias persists across sessions.
